Posted this on my Facebook eleven months ago (February 2016). Funny how some things never change.
Because it is February and because it is my heart.
1. He should love God more than anything. Because that IS the first commandment.
2. He should be Catholic because St. Paul said in Colossians 3:18, “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” And I wouldn’t want to be taken away from my Church.
3. He should be kind and respectful because St. Paul – again – said in Colossians 3:19, “Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them,” and so did St. Peter when he said, “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered” (Peter 3:7).
4. He should intend to be faithful and “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous” (Hebrews 13:4).
5. He should be responsible because according to St. Paul in 1 Timothy 5:8, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
6. He should have an open mind and heart because in Proverbs 19:27, “Cease to hear instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.”
7. He should be ready because in Proverbs 24:27, “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.”
8. He should place a high value on learning, as it said in Proverbs 24:5, “A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might.”
9. “He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity” (1 Timothy 3:4).
10. He should strive to heed, “Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth” (Proverbs 5:18) as I will in him. Because maybe I will grow old. Maybe wrinkled. Maybe frail. Maybe sick. And maybe fat.
Because it is February and because it is my heart.
